WHAT IS REIKI?
REIKI ENERGY HEALING - OR BIOFIELD MEDICINE
Reiki (pronounced Raykee) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy. "Ki" is the non-physical vitality that gives life to all living things. Reiki was used thousands of years ago in Tibet, China and India. Dr Mikao Usui rediscovered it over a hundred years ago and this skill was "westernised" and passed on to students all over the world in the first half of the twentieth century. Modern science is now able to measure the electromagnetic fields which exist in and around all living things and put forward a scientific hypothesis for how healing works.
This non-invasive therapy reinforces the body's natural ability to harmonise itself, and can support and enhance all other forms of treatment. Reiki works holistically to balance the whole person and brings about a deep sense of relaxation and wellbeing. This is because it works on the different levels of self: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. No belief systems are attached to Reiki and there is no conflict with any prior religious beliefs held.
This gentle, yet powerful complementary therapy can be used with confidence alongside orthodox healthcare. As such, it expands treatment options. It is not however an alternative to conventional medicine. Reiki is growing in popularity and is now being used in various locations including GP surgeries, hospices, hospitals, drug rehabilitation, HIV centres and in the care of the elderly. It is becoming increasingly popular with healthcare professionals such as nurses and physiotherapists, as another "tool" in their treatment toolbox!
Reiki is non-diagnostic, non-interventionist, non-manipulative and no pressure is applied. A session is usually carried out with the client fully clothed, lying down or seated comfortably. Reiki may be experienced as a flow of energy, a wonderful feeling of warmth and calm. It is deeply relaxing. It encourages and supports positive personal choices such as improving diet, taking more exercise, and devoting more time to relaxation. As students of Reiki we are trying to become the best versions of ourselves we can, helping us to deal with the stress and speed of modern life.
Further information can be obtained from The Reiki Association, of which I am a teacher member. It is involved in promoting best practice, professional conduct and the setting of National Occupational Standards, so you can be assured my teaching will be of the highest standard.
